The Farnsworth Art Museum's photography collection includes works by national and regionally-known artists connected with Maine, including 60 prints by Berenice Abbott (a Maine resident) and an important group of over 300 prints by Kosti Ruohomaa, a LIFE magazine photographer who lived in Rockland. Another important collection is a series of over 30 photographs by Rudy Burckhardt, the New York-based documentary photographer and filmmaker who lived during the summer in Montville, Maine, not far from Rockland. Other pictorialist, portrait and documentary photographers whose works are included in the collection are Elliott Porter, George Tice, and Elliott Elisofonall of whom either lived or summered in Maine. Contemporary photography is also well represented and recent additions to the collection have included photographs by Joyce Tenneson, Bob Brooks, Jeffrey Becton, William Wegman and Scott Peterman. |
