SCULPTURE

The Farnsworth Museum owns a superb group of sculpture by Louise Nevelson that is the second largest collection of her work in a public institution in the country. Born in Kiev, Russia, she grew up in Rockland and considered the Farnsworth her "hometown museum." Among the many works that she gave to the Museum are a magnificent collection of her original jewelry—pendants made from black painted wood with metallic overlays of silver and bronze. While the museum owns works from all phases of her career, the collection is particularly strong in her early sculpture from the 1940s and '50s. Sculpture by other artists from this period includes work by William Zorach, Abbot Patterson, William Muir and Leonard Baskin.

Many pieces from the Farnsworth's contemporary sculpture collection are sited outdoors in the garden areas of several of the buildings within the museum's campus. One of the most important of these pieces is Robert Indiana's iconic LOVE sculpture, which was purchased for the collection in 1999. Over recent years the outdoor collection has been enhanced by the addition of work from artists like Charlie Hewitt, Edwin Gamble, Priscilla Pattison, Ken Greenleaf and Celeste Roberge.
