As part of his design for The New York State Pavilion at the 1964 World's Fair in Flushing, New York, architect Philip Johnson commissioned several of America's leading contemporary artists to do works for the building. The group included Peter Agostini, John Chamberlain, Robert Indiana, Ellsworth Kelly, Alexander Liberman, Robert Mallory, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist and Andy Warhol. Among the works that were hung on the outside of the Pavilion's cylindrical "Theaterama" was Robert Indiana's EAT. In 2009, as part of the Farnsworth's Robert Indiana and the Star of Hope exhibition, the sculpture was installed on the roof of the Farnsworth – the first time it had appeared since 1964. Reinstalled again this year, EAT stands atop the museum, facing Rockland's Main Street. Farnsworth Chief Curator Michael K. Komanecky will be joined in a conversation with the artist Robert Indiana to explore the history of the World's Fair commission.
