All of these artists reference kinds of images we are familiar with on a daily basis. We spend much of our lives influenced by movies, television, video games, and consumer culture such as fashion and design. Contemporary art often invokes these experiences and objects, and can sometimes look like a commodity. Featured artists include: Barbara Kruger, Michael Ray Charles, Matthew Barney, Andrea Zittel, Mel Chin.

On Thursday nights at 6 p.m. through the winter, community members are invited for an evening out. The Farnsworth Art Museum will be featuring Art:21, a PBS-produced series that focuses exclusively on contemporary visual art and artists in the United States. Art:21 provides fascinating and intimate footage of the artists at work as they transform inspiration into art, and grapple with the physical and visual challenges of achieving their artistic vision. Moviegoers are encouraged to head out to one of Rockland’s many fine restaurants afterwards to continue the ideas and conversation spurred by the film. Shake off winter’s hibernation, invite a friend, and see you then!
