Tips for a successful visit:
- Divide students into groups of 10 before arriving. This will save time once you get to the museum. It is also helpful if students are wearing nametags.
- Allow enough extra time for bathroom visits before your scheduled tour begins.
- Let chaperones know about their responsibilities for keeping their group together and maintaining discipline (see museum rules below).
- Review the museum rules below with your students before arrival. Docents will greet your students upon arrival and go over the rules again before starting the tour.
Seven museum rules for student groups:
All of these rules are intended to keep the artwork and visitors safe.
- BE CAREFUL
Do not touch any artwork in the museum. A painting is fragile and can be damaged forever by innocent touches. The invisible oil on your fingertips will leave a film on any surface that is touched. Over time, these oils attract dust and dirt that will damage artwork.
- BE CONSIDERATE
There will be other groups and visitors in the museum. Stay with your group, and with your chaperone. Guards are posted throughout the galleries. Please follow their instructions.
- USE QUIET VOICES
An art museum is a place of beauty and concentration. Discussion is encouraged but voices must be kept low. If a docent leads your tour, please treat them as you would your own teacher. If this is a self-tour, teachers are entirely responsible for students' conduct while on the museum grounds.
- NO BACKPACKS, UMBRELLAS, HATS
Backpacks, umbrellas, and hats are not allowed in the museum. A coatroom and lockers are available for storing items.
- PHOTOGRAPHY
NO PHOTOGRAPHS OF ARTWORK. Works of art are protected by copyright law and may not be photographed. Photographs can be taken outside the museum, in the museum lobby, in the studio, or the Olson House.
- FOOD
Food, drink, and gum are not allowed in the galleries. Lunch may be eaten in the garden in good weather, and in the studio classroom with prior arrangement.
- CHAPERONES
One adult chaperone must accompany every 10 students. Self-guided tours must have two chaperones for every 10 students. The docents will manage the group during the tour, but chaperones are expected to step in to discipline in the event of misconduct. Chaperones must stay with their groups at all times.
The museum reserves the right to ask any member of your group to leave if our rules are not observed. Thank you for helping us make a successful museum experience for you and your group. (top)
