From his earliest work with glass to his signature aerial panoramas of Maine islands, Eric Hopkins has consistently explored boundaries—of medium, of space, and of vision. Born on North Haven Island, Hopkins has attended the Rhode Island School of Design and the Monserrat College of Art, and has taught at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. In the 1980s, he developed images for which he is most known: aerial views of coastal motifs, in which horizons bend and an archipelago of spruce topped isles spreads across the canvas. Eric Hopkins: Above and Beyond is the first book to represent the breathtaking work of this American artist.
Carl Little is the author of more than a dozen art books, including The Watercolors of John Singer Sargent, Edward Hopper’s New England, Paintings of Maine and The Art of Dahlov Ipcar. His articles and reviews have appeared in Art in America, Art New England, Island Journal, and Ornament. He has published poems in many different journals, including the Paris Review and Cafe Review. His Ocean Drinker: New & Selected Poems was published in 2006. He lives on Mount Desert Island.
