Julia's Gallery for Young Artists and the Matinicus Island School are pleased to present Matinicus: The Place Beyond. This photographic celebration of island life, representing the work of the six island students who illustrated their original song about life on Matinicus, is the culminating show of a two-year program called Building Bridges. Ranging in age from 6 to 14 years, the young artists worked with photographer Charlotte Dixon of Maine Media Workshops, photographer Chris Pinchbeck and mentor island artist Maury Colton to learn how to ‘write with light.’ The resulting exhibition illuminates life on Matincus Island, with thirty compelling photographs of boots, lobster traps, the expansive sky, spring lupine and other unique island icons. The Building Bridges program was funded by a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
