This exhibition of approximately fifty paintings features works by some of America’s foremost landscape painters of the nineteenth century, including Thomas Cole, Fitz Henry Lane, Sanford Robinson Gifford, John Frederick Kensett, Thomas Moran, and George Inness. Together they and their contemporaries, including many other artists who worked in Maine, forged a vision of the great natural bounty not only of the country’s original thirteen colonies, but also of a westward-expanding United States. The exhibition will also include portraits and figure studies by Thomas Eakins, Eastman Johnson, Elihu Vedder, Howard Pyle and others that offer another perspective on American life from the 1820s to the 1890s
