The New England Museum Association has announced their 2008 publications design awards and Mary Margaret Sesak, art director at the Farnsworth Art Museum, was honored. The design competition recognizes excellence in design, production and effective communication in all aspects of museum publishing. Entries are judged by a panel experienced in publication, design, marketing and communications. Awards are given to those entries that most effectively present their message to the intended audience. There were 209 publications from 70 museums entered in nineteen categories.
Sesak was honored for her 2008 design for the Farnsworth’s Annual Fund development packet that included a DVD about the Farnsworth by cinematographer Dale W. Schierholt of Owls Head.
Sesak has previously won NEMA awards for her 2003 visitor’s guides for the Farnsworth’s Alison Hildreth and Celeste Roberge exhibitions, her 2006 exhibition invitation for Alex Katx in Maine, and her 2008 exhibition catalogue Alex Katz: Early Paintings and fundraiser invitation The Maine Event. In 2004 and 2007 her fundraiser invitation designs for The General Henry Knox Museum were honored by NEMA. In addition, Sesak won a silver award in 2001 from the Maine Graphic Arts Association Printing Excellence Program for her design for Jamie Wyeth: Monhegan, an exhibition catalogue published by the Farnsworth. The printer for these projects was J.S. McCarthy in Augusta, ME.
Farnsworth Interim Director and Chief Curator Michael K. Komanecky said, “Mary Sesak is one of the finest graphic designers I have had the pleasure to work with, and I am happy to know her talent has been recognized by her peers via this award.”
