Our mission is to celebrate Maine’s role in American art

The Farnsworth Art Museum offers a nationally recognized collection of works from many of America’s greatest artists. With more than 20,000 square feet of gallery space and more than 15,000 works in the collection, there is always something new on view at the Farnsworth. The museum has one of the nation’s largest collections of works by sculptor Louise Nevelson. The Museum has an extensive collection of Maine works by three generations of Wyeths—N.C., Andrew and Jamie—and in a unique partnership with the Wyeth Center for American Art and the Brandywine Museum, has access to more than 7,000 Wyeth works of art.

Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion Commitment

Art is a medium for understanding. Artists translate the world in which we live. Through art we enhance our perspective and view the world through another’s eyes. Through art we better understand sociocultural differences and experiences, both past and present. Art provides opportunities to nurture empathy and teach emotional intelligence; ultimately art is a contributing factor to the well-being of our society. Art museums are uniquely positioned to be leaders in social and cultural progress toward more diverse, equitable, and inclusive communities and organizations.

The Farnsworth has a task force composed of staff and Board members to address issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility and to identify solutions. Through our programs, exhibitions, collection, policies, and practices, the Farnsworth is committed to creating an environment for visitors and staff that is positive and in keeping with our focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. We seek to ensure the Farnsworth is a welcoming and inclusive museum where together we celebrate art and understanding.
