Meet the Team: Kathy Derene

Kathy Derene

Kathy grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut and later raised her own family there. She has always loved and appreciated a wide range of artists- from van Gogh to Andrew Wyeth- and at one time wanted to be an artist. She fondly remembers visiting museums in NYC as a child and later with her own children. She has been working in real estate in Greenwich since the early 1980s, in many ways self- taught, but also worked closely with one of the top agents in the country. Kathy’s keen observation served her well in her real estate transactions as she often was exposed to original works of art. She developed a close friendship with her boss, Tamar Lurie, and her late husband political cartoonist, Ranan Lurie. He would often ask Kathy for her input on his cartoons, knowing he could rely upon her honest and perceptive observations.

Kathy’s love and devotion to her children led her to many volunteering commitments. She was one of the cofounders of Greenwich Military Moms Network, an organization to connect families of those who serve in the military. Kathy’s son served for six years. She has been a spousal group facilitator at The Den for Grieving Children for seven years.

Kathy has been coming to Maine for over fifty years, but decided to move here permanently during the pandemic to be closer to her family. She joined the Farnsworth docent team last year and especially enjoys working with young children. Kathy appreciates their honesty and non- judgmental outlook. When not at the Farnsworth, Kathy serves on the board of Coastal Family Hospice Volunteers. She loves spending time with her grandchildren, Anthony and Sonny, visiting Maine lighthouses and introducing them to making and appreciating art.
