Through the Maine Art Museum Trail, residents of Maine and visitors to the state have up-close access to some of the world’s best art and artists. The trail route spans 350 miles and nine different towns and cities through the state of Maine. The world-class art museums on the trail offer objects from well-known contemporary artists, native American artists, art of the ancient world and more.

What Is the Maine Art Museum Trail?

The Maine Art Museum Trail is a partnership of nine art museums in Maine, which collectively offer more than 80,000 works of art. Because of the Maine Art Museum Trail, anyone in Maine can access beautiful art without leaving their state borders.

Because of its natural beauty, Maine is a magnet for artists. Visiting art museums in Maine is an excellent way to learn more about Maine artists and the state that inspired their creative work.

Which Museums Take Part in the Maine Art Museum Trail?

There are nine museums that participate in the Maine Art Museum Trail:

Abbe Museum

Spanning two locations, the Abbe Museum features art from the history and cultures of the Native people in Maine, as well as presentations of Native American archaeology within the state. Abbe Museum holds workshops, special events and also features regularly changing exhibitions.

Bates College Museum of Art

This museum houses 8,000 works of art including pre-modern prints, contemporary works on paper, Pre-Columbian art, works by Maine artists, African art and more.

Bowdoin College Museum of Art

The collection at Bowdoin College Museum of Art began in 1811 through a donation of 70 paintings and nearly 150 drawings. Pieces in the collection date back to antiquities and contain over 1,800 Greek, Roman, Assyrian, Byzantine, Egyptian and Chinese pieces.

Colby College Museum of Art

The art collection at the Colby College Museum of Art houses contemporary art pieces and serves as a center for art and art education within the community.

Farnsworth Art Museum

With a nationally recognized collection containing 15,000 works, including an extensive collection of Maine works by three generations of  Wyeth artists: N.C., Andrew and Jamie, the museum is a destination for more than 70,000 visitors in a typical year.

Monhegan Museum of Art & History

The collection at Monhegan Museum of Art & History includes objects of historical and cultural significance to Monhegan Island, Maine.

Ogunquit Museum of American Art

The Ogunquit Museum of American Art is dedicated to the mission of engaging and educating audiences about American art. The museum features a rotating collection on display.

Portland Museum of Art

One of the most celebrated museums in Portland, ME, the Portland Museum of Art is home to art by some of the most famous artists of the modern era, including Winslow Homer, Andy Warhol and Claude Monet.

Zillman Art Museum

With a collection of over 4,000 works, this museum includes photography and original prints. The collection has an emphasis on contemporary art from 1945 to the present day.
