Which Museums Take Part in the Maine Art Museum Trail?
There are nine museums that participate in the Maine Art Museum Trail:
Spanning two locations, the Abbe Museum features art from the history and cultures of the Native people in Maine, as well as presentations of Native American archaeology within the state. Abbe Museum holds workshops, special events and also features regularly changing exhibitions.
This museum houses 8,000 works of art including pre-modern prints, contemporary works on paper, Pre-Columbian art, works by Maine artists, African art and more.
The collection at Bowdoin College Museum of Art began in 1811 through a donation of 70 paintings and nearly 150 drawings. Pieces in the collection date back to antiquities and contain over 1,800 Greek, Roman, Assyrian, Byzantine, Egyptian and Chinese pieces.
The art collection at the Colby College Museum of Art houses contemporary art pieces and serves as a center for art and art education within the community.
With a nationally recognized collection containing 15,000 works, including an extensive collection of Maine works by three generations of Wyeth artists: N.C., Andrew and Jamie, the museum is a destination for more than 70,000 visitors in a typical year.
The collection at Monhegan Museum of Art & History includes objects of historical and cultural significance to Monhegan Island, Maine.
The Ogunquit Museum of American Art is dedicated to the mission of engaging and educating audiences about American art. The museum features a rotating collection on display.
