The Farnsworth offers a wonderful working environment throughout all of our many departments.

Each and every member of our staff plays an integral part in making our mission —Celebrating Maine’s role in American art—accessible to over 100,000 people each year. By joining our team you’ll surround yourself with not only many of America’s greatest artists and their works, but with educators, makers, writers and lovers of art throughout the year. Below are some of the opportunities that are available at this time.

CURRENT OPEN POSITIONS

Volunteers

The Farnsworth seeks museum members to volunteer in a variety of ways.  Whether you are engaging with the public or working behind the scenes, your participation is valued.   The areas which volunteers are most needed are:  Education, Gardening, Membership, and the Museum Store.

Your volunteer experience can be tailored to meet your active lifestyle.   Farnsworth volunteers are men and women from a wide variety of disciplines and ages.  If you have two hours per week/per monthto contribute, we would be interested in talking with you.

If you are looking for a more involved commitment, please consider becoming a docent.

Volunteer Docent Program

Who are the Docents?

Our docents come from all walks of life.  What unites them is an enthusiasm for being life-long learners, engaging with the public, and the wonderful camaraderie of sharing their love and knowledge of art with each other and visitors of all ages through thoughtful discussions about the museum’s collection and exhibitions.

What is the Commitment?

Because of the time and study required of Farnsworth docents, this volunteer opportunity tends to be a long-term commitment.  Many of our docents have been working with the museum for an extended time, some for more than 25 years, with the average length of service being 10 years.

What is the Training?

Prior art experience is not required to become a docent.  Training and mentoring is provided through a series of active, enjoyable, and interactive sessions.
