13 Ways of Looking at a Poem – Poetry Writing Workshop with Kathleen Ellis

A two-week, live ZOOM workshop exploring a wide range of possibilities for creating new poems. How does poetry allow us to break through thresholds and borders? What holds us back? What moves us forward? In this two-week workshop, we will explore thirteen ways to widen our ability to open new spaces and pursue new forms as they offer consolation and meaning in an impartial universe. Using the museum’s exhibits and diverse poetic styles, we will generate new poems for class critique in a supportive environment. Poets and visual artists of all levels welcome. A public zoom poetry reading will be held on Monday, August 23 at 5 pm.

Participants will be sent links to artwork from the Farnsworth’s collection and current exhibits and selected poems prior to each workshop week.

Kathleen Ellis’ most recent poetry collection is Outer-Body Travel. Recipient of poetry fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Maine Arts Commission, she has led poetry writing workshops at the Farnsworth since 1994. She teaches poetry and creative writing at the University of Maine, Orono, and new poems appear in Café Poetry Review, Pain: Poems for the Pandemic, Enough! Poems of Resistance and Protest, and A Dangerous New World: Maine Voices on the Climate Crisis.
