Andrew Wyeth: Maine Legacy Member Preview Tour

Farnsworth members are invited to a special preview tour of Andrew Wyeth: Maine Legacy on Thursday, March 12, two days prior to the exhibition opening to the public. Leith MacDonald, on staff at the Wyeth Study Center, will lead an informative, engrossing look at the paintings Andrew Wyeth completed during his many years in Maine.
Andrew Wyeth embraced the state of Maine and painted the world he saw there from the late 1920s through 2008 —almost half of Maine’s 200 years of statehood. Spanning two of the Farnsworth’s galleries, the exhibition Andrew Wyeth: Maine Legacy highlights paintings completed during Andrew Wyeth’s years in Maine.
Few artists have successfully captured Maine’s spirit; Andrew Wyeth, however, has become synonymous with the state’s identity. He has been recognized in Maine with multiple awards, honorary degrees, and a proclamation that each year Wyeth Day be celebrated on July 12, his birthday, to honor his and his family’s long-lasting ties with Maine, and their many contributions to the state’s artistic and cultural heritage.
The Farnsworth’s Wyeth Study Center Gallery highlights the artist’s Maine portraits in tempera, watercolor and pencil, with an overview and discussion of Andrew’s mediums. Selected audio recordings from friends and models are included in the exhibition.
The Hadlock Gallery features Andrew’s paintings of architecture, weather, and landscape completed in tempera, and watercolor during his 70+ years in Maine. Also included in the exhibition is an early drawing pad, from 1938, done in ink and pencil. It features figures and scenes he made from the Port Clyde area.
This exhibition is part of the Farnsworth’s Maine 200 bicentennial celebration First to Hail the Rising Sun.
