Ashley Bryan, the Poet

A Farnsworth [collective] event

Ashley Bryan. Peter Ralston/Ralston Gallery

August 12 @ 6:30 pm 8:30 pm

In collaboration with the Poet’s Corner, the Farnsworth [collective] presents Poet Carl Little and Portland Poet Laureate Maya Williams in a celebration of Ashley’s poetry. The event is free to the public, but seating is limited and registration is required.

Farnsworth current and prospective [collective] members are invited to attend a poetry reading to celebrate Maine in America 2022 Award Winner Ashley Bryan. In addition to being a talented painter and illustrator, Ashley was also a talented poet. Ashley was known to recite Shakespearean sonnets from memory at parties, and he liked to open his events with a call and response reading of Langston Hughes’ poem “My People.”

Ashley’s friend and fellow poet Carl Little will be joined by Portland Poet Laureate Maya Williams to read their own works in response to the Ashley Bryan: Beauty in Return exhibition, and share Ashley’s poetry. Following the reading, guests will be invited to a small reception in the museum library featuring sushi provided by Portland’s Mr. Tuna.

The [collective] is a contemporary FAM special interest group that has access to additional local events. This is an opportunity for community members to participate in exciting and interactive programming influenced and inspired by Farnsworth exhibitions, as well as current cultural phenomena and movements.
