Graphite Drawing with Whitney River

Back by popular demand! Suitable for beginning and intermediate drawers. Explore the fine art of rendering in value with an expert. In this class, students will gain confidence in drawing through a combination of fun exercises, quick sketches, and extended still lives. Shading with graphite requires us to slow down, focus, and allow ourselves to be completely present and aware of what we are perceiving. In this way, rendering and shading through careful observation can be a very relaxing, fun antidote to the busy pace of life.

Each class will be divided into a fun warm-up that will help develop eye-hand coordination and graphite control, a quick sketch from life to hone observational skills, and focused work on a longer project to build a greater understanding of value differences and shading techniques. Students will have the opportunity to share their work, and to appreciate the drawings of many talented artists as we explore what can be done with just pencil and paper.  

Whitney River graduated from Yale University in 1995. Since then she has shown extensively throughout New England, and her drawings and paintings are represented in many private and corporate collections. She is inspired by the natural beauty that surrounds her in Maine, both in the woods and by the ocean. She uses oil on canvas and graphite on paper to render found natural objects with great detail and precision.
