Painting with Andrew Wyeth: Techniques in Egg Tempera with Barbara Thomas

November 8, 2021 @ 10:00 am 12:00 pm

Barbara Thomas, Balmy Day

Mondays, November 1, 8, 15, and December 6 (No classes on November 22 and 29 to accommodate the holiday), 10 am to 12 noon

Online via Zoom

In this studio workshop, students will explore the medium of egg tempera, an ancient technique where egg yolk is added to pigment, creating a layered surface of paint that dries to a deep sheen. This is the painting technique used by Andrew Wyeth for more finished works. Over four sessions, Barbara will lead students in how to mix and use egg tempera to create a finished work. Each student will create their own still life to work from. Each week we will build the surface, adding more to our painting, learning the technique, and addressing basic principles of painting: light and shadow, composition, color mixing, rendering, etc. Students will work with their own materials, Barbara will provide a list and information for lead-time preparation.

Barbara Thomas has been an artist all her life and an artist-teacher for over 20 years, teaching at leading arts and education institutions.  Barbara has an MFA degree in Art and Design from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA.
