CANCELLED. Pysanka! Ukrainian Egg-Decorating Workshop with Lesia Sochor

April 11, 2020 @ 10:00 am 12:00 pm

Decorate eggs in the Ukrainian style! Draw designs on eggs with melted beeswax using a tool called a kystka. You will then dip the egg in a series of dyes, with the final pattern revealed when the wax is removed.

The pysanka was common among Slavic people since 5,000 BCE and became deeply important in spring rituals, symbolizing nature’s rebirth.

This workshop is recommended for families with children 8 years old and up. Solo adults are welcome as well.

Lesia Sochor is an artist of direct Ukrainian descent and lives in Brooks. She studied fine art at the Philadelphia College of Art, has been teaching for more than 25 years, and has exhibited extensively in the state of Maine and beyond. She learned the ancient spring tradition of pysanka from her mother and enjoys sharing this craft with others. See examples of her work at lesiasochor.com.

Cost: $35; $20 museum members; $8 children under 16
