Raising the Stakes: Poetry Workshop with Kathleen Ellis

July 8, 2019 @ 9:00 am 12:00 pm

Monday through Friday, July 8–12

How does poetry allow us to reveal things we may not even know are hidden? How can poetry make the invisible visible, the illegible legible, the private both revealed and withheld? In this workshop, students will explore new strategies and techniques—folding and unfolding, hinging and unhinging new poems. Using The Screen Show exhibition and an array of styles, we will jump-start new poems for class critique in a supportive environment. Poets and visual artists of all levels welcome.

Kathleen Ellis is the author of five collections of poems, most recently Outer-Body Travel. In addition to the Pablo Neruda Poetry Prize from Nimrod and the Southwest Review poetry prize, she has received poetry fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and Maine Arts Commission. Poems from her manuscript, Dear Darwin, were set to music and released as a Parma Recordings CD, nominated for a 2015 Grammy Award. She teaches literature and creative writing at the University of Maine and coordinates the annual POETS/SPEAK! fest at the Bangor Public Library.

Cost: $210; $180 museum members
