A media master too varied for one art-historical label, Red Grooms (b. 1937) is an artist who takes the world too seriously not to be amused by it. We’ll explore Grooms’ unique career, including his early years in downtown New York, and the vital summer of 1964 when he painted and made movies in Maine with a community of creative friends.

Dr. Judith Stein is a writer and curator specializing in post-WWII American art. As curator at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1985, she organized the first major traveling retrospective of the work of Red Grooms. She is the executive vice president of the American section of the International Art Critics Association and the author of the prize-winning biography, Eye of the Sixties, Richard Bellamy and the Transformation of Modern Art (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2016).
