Reduction Linocuts with Sherrie York

Saturday and Sunday, November 2 and 3

Linocuts, or linoleum block prints, offer countless creative possibilities and can be created with the simplest of tools, entirely by hand, at your kitchen table! Reduction printing allows the artist to develop a multi-color image through successive cutting, inking, and printing of a single block. In this two-day workshop, you will learn:

                • How to design an image for reduction printing
                • How to transfer your design to the linoleum block
                • Block cutting techniques
                • Tips for effective inking
                • Registration methods (how to line up each color so it prints in the right place!)
                • Hand-printing techniques

We’ll also talk about papers, inks, tools, and the wide variety of applications for relief printmaking. Participants will create a small edition of 3-color reduction prints and gain the knowledge and experience to create their own new works at home.

Please bring a $20 materials fee for the instructor on the first day of class.

A self-taught printmaker and compulsive wanderer of landscapes, Sherrie York has an international reputation for lyrical and expressive works on paper. Observation is the core of her practice, whether she is making a watercolor sketch of tidbits collected along the shore or carving a complex linocut block of pinecones and leaf litter. Her work has been presented in national and international exhibitions and is represented in corporate and museum collections.
