Simple Books with Everyday Materials with Cynthia McGuirl

Participants will explore multiple book structures using easily available materials and tools. Together we’ll make 10 different book types: scroll, accordion, single sheet 6-page, cable tie spiral bound, ribbon bound, box, map fold, pamphlet stitch (single & multiple signature), and hardcover (on a purchased softcover notebook). The approach taught is a good way to quickly make mockups for art books, create presentations for stories and for teaching children book-making. Students are encouraged to experiment with their own ideas after they complete the tutorial of techniques. Each student will go home with sample books and instructions for creating them. Suitable for beginners, artists who want to explore storytelling objects, and teachers who want a repertoire of books to create in the classroom.

All materials are provided and the instructor will have extra tools to share. If participants have their own tools, they can bring: rotary cutting mat, knife with breakaway blades, bone folder, and ruler.
