Summer Blooms: An Introduction to Encaustic Painting with Hélène Farrar

Whatever your relationship to flowers – an avid gardener, a giver or receiver of a bouquet, or someone with a creative eye, we are excited to bring you a playful workshop looking to summer blooms and the ancient medium of encaustic. Join Artist Hélène Farrar in exploring this hot molten wax painting medium where we will drip, pour, drag, layer, heat, and scrape! In developing a rich variety of textures, we will observe and look to summer flowers for form, gesture, and color. Class time will be divided between demonstrations and individual work time. Proper studio ventilation, wax safety, and how to “finish” artworks in terms of framing and care will also be touched upon. Students will leave with multiple finished pieces and be recharged by this dynamic workshop.

Hélène Farrar has taught and worked in the visual arts for twenty years while actively exhibiting in commercial, nonprofit and university galleries in New England, New York, Pennsylvania, Italy, and England. Farrar has a BA in Studio Art from the University of Maine and a Masters of Fine Art Degree in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College in Vermont. Hélène currently owns and operates her own private art school in Maine out of her “Farmhouse” studio, where she holds varied workshops and classes. Her teaching practice has spanned the state in many local arts non-profits, and has taught encaustics at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and the International Encaustics Conference. Farrar is represented by Archipelago Fine Arts in Rockland.
