Abstract Flash: Unseen Andrew Wyeth

April 6 – September 9, 2024

Andrew Wyeth (1917–2009) said, “My struggle is to preserve that abstract flash like something you caught out of the corner of your eye” and on numerous occasions called himself an abstract artist. Prompted by these statements, Abstract Flash: Unseen Andrew Wyeth is the first exhibition to present a remarkable body of abstract works on paper never before exhibited that range across six decades of works made in Maine. This exhibition explores broadly what abstraction meant to Wyeth and the role it played in his art making.

Abstract Flash is an exhibition in two parts. The Brandywine Museum of Art  hosted its first installment, centering on Wyeth’s Pennsylvania abstractions. A fully illustrated catalogue is available with contributions from Wyeth Study Center staff William L. Coleman, Karen Baumgartner, and artist Eric Aho.
