In the 1960s, artist and master printmaker Donald Saff created a printmaking atelier unlike any other in the country. In launching his first collaborative venture, Graphicstudio, in 1968, he invited and encouraged nationally prominent artists to think three-dimensionally with printmaking. His intent was to encourage them to work collaboratively and produce works that were mixtures of painting, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture. For decades, Saff has worked closely and intensely with world-renowned artists as they navigated the journey from conception to finished product, offering solutions and ideas that helped bring their work to the public eye. Thus he became a catalyst for the fusing by young artists of some of the most adventurous and provocative works of their time. Among the artists whose works will be included in the Farnsworth Art Museum exhibition are Jim Dine, Nancy Graves, Roy Lichtenstein, Philip Pearlstein, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist and James Turrell.
The Lead Exhibition Sponsors for Pushing Boundaries are Camden National Bank, Down East magazine, Mrs. F. Eugene Dixon, and Davis Family Foundation. The exhibition is also sponsored by Hampton Inn & Suites – Rockland/Thomaston.
