Introducing the Eddie C. and C. Sylvia Brown Institute for Museum Studies Program

The Eddie C. & C. Sylvia Brown Institute for Museum Studies kicks off this summer with generous support from The Sylvia and Eddie Brown Foundation, an anonymous benefactor, and Farnsworth Board Chair Stephanie L. Brown. This initiative goes beyond standard internships by offering a comprehensive program that includes learning, mentorship, and exposure.

About the Internship Program:

  • Stipends for student interns, housing and travel arrangements to and from the program provided by the museum to remove any barriers to learning.
  • Collaboration with historically black universities. For example, the museum will partner with Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, and Morgan State University, in Baltimore, Maryland in its inaugural year to bring in three students for the internship program.
  • Immersive experiences tailored to student interests across museum departments. Typical museum internships center on curatorial experiences.
  • Mentorship and guidance from Farnsworth professionals as well as leaders in the museum field and community. Hands-on projects, workshops, and guest speaker sessions with partners including Genius Black, a social innovator, entrepreneur and musician based in Portland, Maine.
  • An emphasis on exploring the rich artist community of Maine. Students will have an opportunity to meet artists and visit artist studios such as Sean Alonzo Harris.

For our inaugural year, we are partnering with Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia and Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland to bring three students up to the Midcoast.
