Maine: First State To Hail the Rising SunMake your donation now
In 2002, Robert Indiana, one of the preeminent figures in American art, fulfills a commission to create an original work of art. First State To Hail the Rising Sun hangs for the next 18 years in the Maine State House in Augusta. Now, in March 15, 2020, this important piece of our art history comes to the Farnsworth Art Museum for public display. The installation kicks off Maine 200, a year-long, statewide celebration to honor the anniversary of Maine’s election as the 28th state in the union
We hope you’ll join with us in celebrating Maine’s extraordinary contributions to art and culture at your museum. Mark this momentous occasion with a gift to our 2020 Museum Fund for Excellence. In doing so, you’ll support our work to celebrate Maine and the important role we play in American art.
Maine: First to Hail the Rising Sun
Indiana, who lived and worked on Vinalhaven for more than 25 years before his death in 2018, was immensely proud of his adopted home, this special place we all hold dear. First State memorializes Maine as the farthest east and therefore the first state to meet the morning. Of course, the work has a double meaning. For as all Mainers (both by birth and passion) know, Maine leads in so many ways. The Farnsworth is proud to be counted among the state’s leading art and cultural institutions. From the thrill of discovering a new piece of art that opens our eyes to the beauty around us to boosting confidence and scholastic performance among schoolchildren through our model Arts-in-Education program, we play a central role in the cultural life of midcoast Maine and contribute a $58 million impact to the local economy each year.
The Farnsworth: First in Excellence
Our goal is to be one of the premier regional art museums in the country. Your gift to our Museum Fund for Excellence today paves the way for greatness in our work. Maine’s Bicentennial is a perfect year to connect with our mission of excellence and to rededicate your passion for the arts and its ability to transform lives. Your gift to the Museum Fund helps us in all we do, from exploring Maine through the eyes of today’s leading artists to working in the schools so that young kids may discover the power of creativity.
