In the days before electricity, light below a vessel’s deck was provided by candles, oil and kerosene lamps, all dangerous aboard a wooden ship. Small, conical deck prisms were an innovative solution. Laid flush into the deck, they drew light below without weakening the planks.

This Deck Prism is an exact reproduction of those found aboard the Charles W. Morgan, America’s last all-wooden whaleship.
