Description
Painting in the post-impressionist period, Vincent van Gogh rejected the naturalism of impressionism in favor of bold, intense colors that conveyed emotion. Of The Night Cafe, he wrote to his brother Theo, “The room is blood red and dark yellow. . . . Everywhere there is a clash and contrast of the most alien reds and greens.”
